Symbolizing Peter's restoration
Before this conversation, Peter had denied Jesus three times out of fear (Luke 22:54-62). Peter deeply regretted his actions and wept bitterly, realizing his failure. By asking Peter three times if he loved Him, Jesus offered Peter an opportunity for restoration. It mirrored Peter's three denials and allowed him to express his love and repentance three times. Through this, Jesus reaffirmed Peter's role and called him to strengthen others once he had turned back (Luke 22:32).
Emphasizing the importance of love in discipleship
Jesus' repeated questioning of Peter highlighted the essential role of love in discipleship. Jesus commanded His followers to love one another, saying, 'By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another' (John 13:34-35). Love is not merely a sentiment but a foundational aspect of following Jesus. It motivates us to serve others and fulfill the greatest commandments of loving God and our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-40). Love is inseparable from obedience, as Jesus said, 'If you love me, keep my commands' (John 14:15).
