Who created God?

The question of who created God touches on the nature of God as understood in Christian theology. The Bible presents God as the eternal, uncreated being who exists outside of time and space:

  1. God is Eternal:
    • Verse: "Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God." (Psalm 90:2 NKJV)
    • Explanation: The Bible describes God as existing from "everlasting to everlasting," meaning He has no beginning and no end. God is eternal, uncreated, and self-existent. He has always existed and always will, making Him distinct from all created beings.
  2. God is the First Cause:
    • Verse: "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last." (Revelation 22:13 NKJV)
    • Explanation: God refers to Himself as the "Alpha and Omega," indicating that He is the beginning and the end of all things. In philosophical terms, God is the "First Cause," the uncaused cause of everything that exists. He is the source of all creation, but He Himself is uncaused.
  3. God is Self-Existent (Aseity):
    • Verse: "And God said to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM.' And He said, 'Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, "I AM has sent me to you."'" (Exodus 3:14 NKJV)
    • Explanation: God’s self-identification as "I AM" reveals His self-existence, or aseity. This means that God exists by His own nature and is not dependent on anything or anyone else for His existence. He is the self-sufficient, self-sustaining being.
  4. God is the Creator of All Things:
    • Verse: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1 NKJV)
    • Explanation: The very first verse of the Bible affirms that God is the creator of the entire universe. Everything that exists, whether visible or invisible, was made by Him. As the Creator, God is not part of the created order and therefore is not subject to the limitations of created beings.
  5. God is Beyond Time:
    • Verse: "But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." (2 Peter 3:8 NKJV)
    • Explanation: God exists outside of time as we understand it. Time is part of the created order, but God is eternal and not bound by time. His existence transcends the temporal realm, meaning He has no beginning or end.
  6. God’s Nature is Incomprehensible:
    • Verse: "Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; And His greatness is unsearchable." (Psalm 145:3 NKJV)
    • Explanation: God’s nature is beyond human comprehension. While we can know God through what He has revealed in Scripture, the fullness of His being is beyond our finite understanding. The question of who created God stems from a human perspective that does not fully grasp the concept of an eternal, uncreated being.
  7. God is Immutable (Unchanging):
    • Verse: "For I am the Lord, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob." (Malachi 3:6 NKJV)
    • Explanation: God’s immutability means that He does not change over time. His eternal nature remains the same, affirming that He is not subject to the processes that affect created beings, including change, decay, or origin.
  8. God Alone is Uncreated:
    • Verse: "To whom then will you liken Me, Or to whom shall I be equal?" says the Holy One." (Isaiah 40:25 NKJV)
    • Explanation: God declares that there is no one like Him, emphasizing His unique, uncreated nature. All other beings, whether human, angelic, or material, are created by Him, but He alone exists eternally without a creator.
  9. God is the Source of All Life:
    • Verse: "For in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, 'For we are also His offspring.'" (Acts 17:28 NKJV)
    • Explanation: This verse underscores that all life originates from God. Everything that exists derives its existence from Him, yet He Himself derives existence from nothing outside of Himself.
  10. God is the Uncaused Cause:
    • Verse: "For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen." (Romans 11:36 NKJV)
    • Explanation: God is described as the source ("of Him"), the means ("through Him"), and the purpose ("to Him") of all things. This highlights His role as the uncaused cause, the one from whom everything originates but who Himself is unoriginated.

In conclusion, the Bible teaches that God is the eternal, self-existent, uncreated being who is the source of all life and existence. He is beyond time and space, and His nature is incomprehensible to the finite human mind. The question "Who created God?" does not apply to the God of the Bible, as He exists outside of the created order and has no beginning or end.
