What is the right way to pray to God?
Prayer is a vital aspect of the Christian faith and a primary means of communicating with God. The Bible provides guidance on how to pray effectively:
- Approach God with Reverence:
- Verse: "Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name." (Matthew 6:9 NKJV)
- Explanation: Begin your prayer by addressing God with respect and honor. Recognize His holiness and sovereign nature, which sets the tone for a humble and reverent approach to prayer.
- Begin by Praising God
- Verse: “Praise Him for His mighty acts; Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!” (Psalm 150:2 NKJV)
- Explanation: Prayer is not primarily about us. It is a way to honor the One who deserves it. His greatness refers to Who He is and His acts to what He does. God is described by His attributes, so a practical way to do this is to thank God for one of His attributes every day. (CREATE A LINK TO HIS ATTRIBUTES?) We should also thank Him for all He has done on our behalf, including what He did for us yesterday.
- Pray with Sincerity:
- Verse: "And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words." (Matthew 6:7 NKJV)
- Explanation: God values sincere and heartfelt communication over empty or repetitive phrases. Talk to Him like you would a valued and respected friend, focusing on a sincere relationship with God rather than mere ritual.
- Seek God’s Will:
- Verse: "Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven." (Matthew 6:10 NKJV)
- Explanation: Try to align your prayers with God’s will. The more you know about God and His plans for us, the more accurately you can pray. Ask for His kingdom to be established and His will to be fulfilled, recognizing that His plans are perfect.
- Express Your Needs:
- Verse: "Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors." (Matthew 6:11-12 NKJV)
- Explanation: Bring today’s needs to God, including physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Also, ask God to forgive your sins while you forgive others, acknowledging the importance of grace and reconciliation in prayer.
- Seek Protection and Deliverance:
- Verse: "And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one." (Matthew 6:13 NKJV)
- Explanation: Ask God to protect you from temptation and deliver you from Satan’s attacks. Recognize your need for His strength and guidance to navigate life’s challenges.
- Pray with Faith and Confidence:
- Verse: "And whatever you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive." (Matthew 21:22 NKJV)
- Explanation: Approach God with faith, believing that He hears and answers your prayers according to His will. He may grant us our requests; He may deny our requests because what we desire is not what is best; or He may make us wait for His timing. Believe that He will respond to your requests and provide what is best for you.
- Use Jesus as Your Model:
- Verse: “So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.” (Luke 5:16 NKJV)
- Explanation: Follow the example of Jesus, who often prayed to His Father, seeking His will and guidance. We can pray anywhere, any time, even in the midst of a crowd. However, it is also important to follow Jesus’ example of shutting off the world around you for a time of praying by yourself.
- Be Persistent in Prayer:
- Verse: "And He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart." (Luke 18:1 NKJV)
- Explanation: Be persistent in your prayer life. Seek God’s guidance and help without becoming discouraged. Know that He hears you and is working in His timing to complete His will in you.
