What Does the Bible Say About Self-Love and Self-Care?

The Bible addresses self-love and self-care from a perspective that emphasizes our identity in Christ, the importance of rest, and the balance between caring for ourselves and others. Here’s what Scripture teaches:

  1. Recognize Your Worth in Christ:
  2. The Bible teaches that every person is created in the image of God and has inherent worth. Ephesians 2:10 NKJV says, "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."
  3. Example Application: Understand that your value comes from being a child of God, and embrace the truth that you are loved and valued by Him. This foundation helps foster a healthy sense of self-love rooted in your identity in Christ.

  4. Love Your Neighbor as Yourself:

  5. Jesus teaches the importance of loving others as we love ourselves. Matthew 22:39 NKJV says, "And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’"
  6. Example Application: This command implies that a healthy self-love is necessary to love others well. Take care of your own emotional, physical, and spiritual health so that you can be effective in loving and serving others.

  7. Practice Rest and Sabbath:

  8. God modeled rest when He rested on the seventh day of creation, and He commands His people to observe the Sabbath as a time of rest. Exodus 20:8-10 NKJV says, "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God."
  9. Example Application: Prioritize regular rest and time with God. Ensure that you have periods of rest in your week to recharge physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

  10. Take Care of Your Body:

  11. The Bible teaches that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and should be cared for accordingly. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NKJV says, "Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s."
  12. Example Application: Pay attention to your physical health by eating well, exercising, getting enough sleep, and avoiding harmful substances. Treat your body with respect and care as a vessel of God’s Spirit.

  13. Balance Self-Care with Serving Others:

  14. While self-care is important, the Bible also emphasizes the need to serve and care for others. Philippians 2:3-4 NKJV says, "Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others."
  15. Example Application: Find a balance between taking care of yourself and fulfilling your responsibilities to others. Ensure that your self-care practices do not become self-centered, but rather equip you to serve others effectively.

  16. Seek Emotional and Spiritual Health:

  17. Emotional and spiritual health are important aspects of self-care. Psalm 139:23-24 NKJV says, "Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting."
  18. Example Application: Take time to reflect on your emotional and spiritual well-being. Address any areas of anxiety, stress, or sin through prayer, counseling, and seeking God’s guidance.

  19. Rely on God’s Strength:

  20. The Bible reminds us to rely on God’s strength rather than solely on our own. Isaiah 40:31 NKJV says, "But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint."
  21. Example Application: In moments of exhaustion or weakness, turn to God for strength and renewal. Trust in His ability to sustain you and provide the rest and care you need.

Self-love and self-care, when viewed through the lens of Scripture, are about recognizing your worth in Christ, taking care of the body and spirit God has given you, and finding a balance between caring for yourself and serving others. This holistic approach helps you live a life that honors God and reflects His love to those around you.
