What does the Bible say about lust and its control?

Lust, defined as an intense and inappropriate desire, particularly for sexual pleasure, is strongly cautioned against in the Bible. As mentioned earlier, Jesus equates lustful thoughts with adultery in Matthew 5:28 NKJV, indicating that lust is a sin of the heart, even if it does not result in physical action.

The Bible also provides guidance on how to control lust:

  • Guarding the Eyes and Mind: Job made a covenant with his eyes to avoid lustful thoughts. Job 31:1 NKJV says, "I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young woman?" This suggests that controlling what we look at is a key step in avoiding lust.
  • Renewing the Mind: Romans 12:2 NKJV advises believers to renew their minds to avoid conforming to the world’s patterns, including those of lust. "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."
  • Fleeing Temptation: The Bible encourages believers to flee from situations that might lead to lust. 2 Timothy 2:22 NKJV says, "Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart."
  • Self-Control: Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV lists self-control as a fruit of the Spirit. Developing self-control through the Holy Spirit’s help is essential in overcoming lust. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law."

Lust is a sin that can have destructive consequences on an individual's spiritual, emotional, and relational well-being. The Bible encourages believers to take practical steps to control and overcome lust through the power of the Holy Spirit.
