Is smoking a sin?

The Bible does not specifically mention smoking, as tobacco was not known in biblical times. However, principles about the care of our bodies and living a life that glorifies God can be applied to this question.

The Body as the Temple of the Holy Spirit: 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NKJV says, "Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s." Since smoking is harmful to the body, it can be argued that it is not in keeping with the biblical call to honor and care for our bodies.

Addiction: Smoking can be highly addictive, and the Bible warns against being enslaved by anything. 1 Corinthians 6:12 NKJV says, "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any." If smoking becomes a habit that controls an individual, it can be seen as contrary to the call to live a life of freedom in Christ.

Consideration of Others: The Bible also teaches us to consider the well-being of others. Philippians 2:4 NKJV says, "Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others." Secondhand smoke can harm those around us, which should be taken into account when considering the impact of smoking.

While smoking is not explicitly labeled as a sin in the Bible, the principles of health, addiction, and consideration for others suggest that it is wise to avoid it.
