How can I forgive others?

Forgiving others can be challenging, especially when the hurt is deep, but the Bible calls us to forgive as we have been forgiven by God. Here’s how you can approach the process of forgiveness:

  1. Recognize God’s Command to Forgive:
    • Verse: "Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do." (Colossians 3:13 NKJV)
    • Explanation: Forgiveness is not optional for believers. Paul tells us that we must endure or put up with other’s behavior, even when it may be irritating or challenging. This requires a heart of humility and understanding, recognizing that everyone has flaws and weaknesses. Instead of holding onto bitterness, resentment, or anger, we are called to forgive those who have wronged us. This command is central to maintaining unity and peace within the Christian community.
    • Example Prayer: "Lord, I recognize that You have commanded me to forgive others, just as You have forgiven me. I ask for Your help to obey this command, even when it is difficult."
  2. Acknowledge the Pain:
    • Verse: “For it is not an enemy who reproaches me; Then I could bear it. Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me; Then I could hide from him. But it was you, a man my equal, My companion and my acquaintance.” (Psalm 55:12-14 NKJV)
    • Explanation: Forgiveness does not mean denying the pain or pretending that the offense didn’t hurt. Acknowledge the pain to God, and allow Him to heal your heart.
    • Example Prayer: "Father, I acknowledge the hurt and pain caused by [mention the situation]. I bring this pain to You, asking for Your healing and grace to help me move forward."
  3. Release the Offense to God:
    • Verse: "Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, 'Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,' says the Lord." (Romans 12:19 NKJV)
    • Explanation: Forgiveness involves releasing the offender into God’s hands and trusting Him to deal with the situation justly.
    • Example Prayer: "Lord, I release [the person] into Your hands. I choose to let go of any desire for revenge or retribution, trusting that You are the righteous judge."
  4. Pray for the Offender:
    • Verse: “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you." (Matthew 5:44 NKJV)
    • Explanation: Jesus teaches us to pray for those who have wronged us.
    • Example Prayer: "Father, I pray for [the person], asking that You bless them and work in their life. Help me to see them through Your eyes and to extend grace and mercy just as You have done for me."
  5. Ask God for the Strength to Forgive:
    • Verse: Philippians 4:13 NKJV encourages, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
    • Explanation: Forgiveness is often not a one-time event but a process that requires God’s strength and grace.
    • Example Prayer: "Lord, I ask for Your strength and grace to forgive [the person]. I know I cannot do it on my own, but I trust in Your power to enable me to forgive fully and completely."
  6. Release Bitterness and Resentment:
    • Verse: "Looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled." (Hebrews 12:15 NKJV)
    • Explanation: Holding onto bitterness and resentment can hinder your spiritual growth and well-being.
    • Example Prayer: "Father, I choose to release all bitterness and resentment from my heart. Cleanse me of any lingering anger, and fill me with Your peace and love."
  7. Repeat the Process as Needed:
    • Verse: “Then Peter came to Him and said, ‘Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.’” (Matthew 18:21-22 NKJV)
    • Explanation: Forgiveness may need to be revisited, especially if the hurt resurfaces. Continue to bring the issue to God in prayer until you experience complete freedom.
    • Example Prayer: "Lord, if this hurt comes up again, I ask for Your continued help to forgive and release it to You. Help me to walk in forgiveness daily, reflecting Your love and grace."

Forgiving others is a powerful act of obedience that frees you from the burden of bitterness and allows God’s healing and peace to flow into your life. It’s a process that requires God’s help, but it leads to spiritual growth and deeper intimacy with Him.
