The Breastplate of Righteousness
In the spiritual arsenal of a believer, the breastplate of righteousness holds a place of honor. Described in Ephesians 6:14, it serves as a metaphorical protection for the heart and moral integrity. This righteousness is twofold: it encompasses the imputed righteousness we receive through faith in Jesus Christ, as well as our pursuit of holy living, a daily endeavor empowered by the Holy Spirit. As Isaiah 59:17 depicts God Himself wearing righteousness as armor, believers are called to reflect His character, seeking justice and fairness in our interactions. The righteousness that comes from living a life pleasing to God acts as a steadfast defense, as Paul writes in Philippians 1:11, being filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
The Biblical Principle of Preparation
Scripture advises us on the importance of preparation, both for temporal challenges and spiritual readiness. Proverbs highlights the practical wisdom of preparing, as seen through the industrious ant (Proverbs 6:6-8), while also acknowledging that victory ultimately comes from the Lord (Proverbs 21:31). Jesus taught about being spiritually prepared for His return through the parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25:1-13), emphasizing the need to be ready at all times. The Apostle Paul also speaks of spiritual preparation, encouraging believers to have their feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:15). As 1 Peter 3:15 reminds us, we should always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks us to give the reason for the hope that we have.
Understanding Pride in a Biblical Context
Pride is often considered one of the most destructive human traits in the Bible, with Proverbs 16:18 warning that it precedes destruction. The Scriptures consistently contrast pride with humility, encouraging believers to clothe themselves with the latter (1 Peter 5:5). It is humility that positions us to receive God's grace, for 'God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble' (James 4:6). The wisdom of Proverbs also teaches us that when pride comes, disgrace follows, but with humility comes wisdom (Proverbs 11:2). Acknowledging that all glory belongs to God and recognizing Him as the source of our abilities is a key to mitigating the dangers of pride and living a life that reflects His glory (Isaiah 2:11).
