Open Soul Foundation and Pas cu Pas brought children from different backgrounds together for a day of collaborative learning, financial education, and the powerful message that all kids are the same.

What happens when you put children from different backgrounds in the same room, hand them the same project, and let them figure it out together? Walls come down. Assumptions dissolve. And something quietly remarkable begins: children start seeing each other as equals.

This March, Open Soul Foundation's partner in Romania, Pas cu Pas Foundation, hosted a joint educational program called "All Kids Are the Same," bringing together children and young people supported by Pas cu Pas alongside children from the Colina Learning Center. The result was a day built on a simple but radical premise: every child belongs at the same table.

kBreaking Down Barriers Through Shared Experience

The program was designed to promote equality, collaboration, and mutual respect. Children from different circumstances were placed in mixed teams and given games, workshops, and projects to complete together. There were no separate groups, no labels, no distinctions drawn between who came from where. The structure itself carried the message: you are the same.

For children who may have grown up feeling set apart by their circumstances, being placed on equal footing with peers from a different environment is more than an afternoon activity. It is an experience that reshapes how they see themselves. When a child realizes they can contribute, lead, problem-solve, and create alongside anyone, something shifts inside. The narrative of "less than" begins to lose its grip.

And for children who may have never interacted with peers from vulnerable backgrounds, the experience opens a different kind of door: empathy. Understanding. The recognition that a child on the other side of town is not so different after all.

Financial Education: Practical Tools for Every Child

Woven into the day's programming was a financial education component, giving children hands-on exposure to concepts like saving, budgeting, and making thoughtful decisions with resources. Financial literacy is one of those life skills that is too often reserved for children who already have access to stability. Pas cu Pas and Open Soul Foundation believe it belongs to every child.

By teaching financial concepts in a collaborative, mixed-group setting, the program reinforced that these are not skills for some children but for all children. Learning together, side by side, made the lessons stick in a different way. It was not a lecture. It was a shared experience, and shared experiences build something that worksheets cannot: trust, connection, and the quiet confidence that comes from being included.

About Pas cu Pas and Open Soul Foundation

Pas cu Pas, meaning "step by step" in Romanian, works with children and young people in vulnerable situations across Romania. Their programming is relational, consistent, and deeply rooted in the belief that every young person deserves the opportunity to grow in dignity. Open Soul Foundation, which operates charitable programs across the United States, Romania, and Ecuador, is honored to partner with Pas cu Pas in work that reflects their shared values: inclusion, generosity, and the inherent worth of every person.

Why It Matters

Equality is not something children learn from a textbook. They learn it by living it. By sitting next to someone they might not have met otherwise, building something together, and walking away knowing they are more alike than different. Programs like "All Kids Are the Same" do not just teach collaboration. They plant seeds of dignity that grow long after the projects are finished and the teams have gone home.

Open Soul Foundation believes that when children learn early that every person matters, they carry that belief into adulthood. And that changes everything.
