Growing Together: What Pas cu Pas Children Learned from Planting a Garden

In June, children at Pas cu Pas in Borșa planted and cared for their own garden, and they learned that real growth takes patience, responsibility, perseverance and hope.

This June at Pas cu Pas Foundation in Borșa, the children traded the classroom for the garden. They prepared the soil, planted seeds and cared for their plants day after day, and they watched their work slowly come to life. Along the way they learned patience, responsibility and perseverance, and they learned to hope for what they couldn’t see yet. What they discovered was bigger than a harvest: real growth takes time, steady effort and care, in a garden and in their own lives.

From Seed to Something Living

The work started long before anything green appeared. The children prepared the ground, loosened the soil and made it ready to receive what they would plant. Then came the seeds, small and unremarkable, pressed into the earth with their own hands.

After that came the part that matters most, the daily care. Plants need watering, attention and protection whether or not anything seems to be happening. For a while nothing visible changes, and then one day it does. For the children, that moment of seeing the first sprouts was proof that their care had made a difference.

Four Lessons from the Garden

Patience. A garden can’t be rushed. The children learned that good things often grow out of sight before they show themselves, and that waiting is part of the process, not a sign that it has failed.

Responsibility. A plant depends on the one who tends it. Each child learned what it means to have something in their care and to show up for it consistently, even on days when it felt easier not to.

Perseverance. Not every seed sprouts, and not every day in the garden is rewarding. The children kept going anyway and learned that steady effort is what eventually bears fruit.

Hope. Planting a seed is an act of faith in what is not yet seen. The children learned to look forward with expectation and to trust that what they had sown would grow.

Why It Matters

Many of the children we serve have had little reason to believe that effort leads somewhere or that waiting is worth it. The garden gave them a way to see it for themselves. They watched something grow because they cared for it, and that is a lesson they can carry into school, into friendships and into the way they see their own future.

Growth in a child’s life works much the same way. It rarely happens overnight. It takes patience, consistent care and people who keep showing up. This June, the children didn’t just grow vegetables. They grew in confidence, in responsibility and in the quiet understanding that their own lives are worth tending too.
