There are seasons when getting to a church building is not a matter of willingness. Night shifts. A newborn. A move to a city where you know nobody. A body that is not cooperating. A season where walking in feels like more than you have.

An online group is not the same as a congregation, and it is worth saying that plainly. It is also not nothing.

Read before you write

Spend a few days just reading. You will learn the tone of a group faster by watching it than by introducing yourself, and you will find out whether it is a place you want to say anything in.

Small beats busy

A quiet group of a dozen people who recognise each other is worth more than a feed with thousands of posts. In a small group your absence is noticed, and being noticed is most of what community does.

Bring one real thing

You do not need to tell your whole story. One honest sentence about your actual week does more than a paragraph of general encouragement, and it gives other people permission to be equally plain.

Alongside, not instead

If a local church becomes possible again, an online group is a good bridge rather than a destination. And if this is a long season, there is no shame in it being what you have for now.
