The hardest part of love, and one of the toughest challenges that anyone faces, is the death of a loved one. Despite its inevitability, it is still one of the most painful moments in life.

When faced with such immense grief and loss, turning to the Bible can make everything more bearable and the healing journey more manageable. When someone dies, the people they left behind suffer immensely.

Sometimes, it feels like there is no end to the grief that a person carries. Inside the Bible’s wisdom lie many truths and teachings that can help overcome this extreme hardship and see beyond it. Death, like everything else, is His will, which is why for some the path to healing lies within Scripture.

We have put together a list of verses meant to help those whose loved ones have passed away. If that person is you, read these with an open mind and heart, and look within their meaning to reflect. If someone you know is going through this, then perhaps you will find here the words to comfort them with.

Healing Bible Verses For Death Of Loved One

1. Psalm 34:18

"The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit."

Explanation: God comforts those who are heartbroken and brings healing to those who are grieving.


2. Matthew 5:4

"Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted."

Explanation: Jesus promises comfort to those who are mourning and grieving a loss.


3. Revelation 21:4

"And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."

Explanation: In Heaven, God will remove all sorrow and pain, giving us eternal peace and comfort.


4. Psalm 147:3

"He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds."

Explanation: God is a healer who cares for those who are hurting and helps mend their broken hearts.


5. John 14:1-3

"Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also."

Explanation: Jesus reassures us that there is a place prepared for us in Heaven, where we can reunite with our loved ones.


6. Psalm 23:4

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me."

Explanation: God is present with us in our darkest moments, offering His comfort and guidance.


7. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God."

Explanation: God is full of compassion and provides comfort during times of sorrow and loss.


8. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

"But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus."

Explanation: Believers have hope in eternal life, allowing us to grieve with hope rather than despair.


9. Isaiah 41:10

"Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."

Explanation: God promises to be with us, giving us strength and support during difficult times.


10. Romans 8:38-39

"For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Explanation: God’s love is with us even in death, and nothing can separate us from His care.

Explanation: Jesus promises eternal life for those who believe in Him, giving hope beyond death.

"My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."

Explanation: God provides strength and comfort, even when our own strength is gone.


13. 2 Corinthians 5:8

"We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord."

Explanation: For believers, death means being present with the Lord, which brings comfort and peace.


14. Matthew 11:28

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

Explanation: Jesus invites those who are grieving to come to Him for rest and relief from their sorrow.


15. Psalm 30:5

"For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life; Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning."

Explanation: Grief is temporary, and joy will come again in time as God brings healing.


16. Lamentations 3:31-32

"For the Lord will not cast off forever. Though He causes grief, Yet He will show compassion According to the multitude of His mercies."

Explanation: God’s love is unfailing, and even in grief, He shows compassion and brings comfort.


17. 1 Peter 5:7

"Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you."

Explanation: God invites us to bring our worries and sorrows to Him because He cares deeply for us.


18. Isaiah 57:1-2

"The righteous perishes, and no man takes it to heart; Merciful men are taken away, While no one considers That the righteous is taken away from evil. He shall enter into peace; They shall rest in their beds, Each one walking in his uprightness."

Explanation: God sometimes allows His people to find peace in death, sparing them from further pain and hardship.


19. Philippians 4:7

"And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

Explanation: God’s peace is beyond human understanding and can comfort our hearts in times of loss.


20. Romans 14:8

"For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s."

Explanation: We belong to God in life and in death, giving us assurance of His care forever.


21. Psalm 116:15

"Precious in the sight of the Lord Is the death of His saints."

Explanation: God values the lives of His faithful servants and receives them with love when they pass away.


22. Isaiah 25:8

"He will swallow up death forever, And the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces; The rebuke of His people He will take away from all the earth; For the Lord has spoken."

Explanation: God will one day end death and sorrow forever, bringing eternal peace.


23. 2 Samuel 12:23

"But now he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me."

Explanation: David recognized that his loved one had gone to be with God, and he found comfort in knowing they would meet again.


24. 1 Thessalonians 5:9-11
